The story behind the Defibrillators

Graham Corday, a Bryn Mason, has had some twenty years’ experience working in the NHS acute sector as a Registered General Nurse, but now he works for Clement Clarke International, as a Senior Business Development Manager. They manufacture equipment for use with respiratory related products, in hospitals and in the community. It involves Graham training all grades of medical staff.

He manages the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Ashton Masonic Properties, Bryn Masonic Hall where he has put his experience to good use.

It has always been his wish to see more of these units out in the community with training given to enable the responder to use the AED and it was some six years ago that  he started to push for a unit at Bryn Masonic Hall. He was successful in getting a unit placed there and for the last five years he has managed the care of the unit and overseen training for all staff and Masons alike. They receive Basic Life Support Training and training on the use of the AED. Two sessions a year at the hall are held and they are always well attended.

Graham is also a member of the Mark Degree and after trying without success to get other halls in the area to invest in an AED, he put the idea of each site where Masons meet having a defibrillator, to the West Lancs Mark Charities Committee and to Graham’s delight they took up the challenge. After looking into the suggestion a unit was offered to all the Masonic Halls within the Province that had not already got one. 21 units have been placed to date. The difficulty they have now is training and updating users on the units. It really is a wonderful thing the Mark degree has done investing in Graham’s suggestion, and as he said to the committee, “I hope they sit on their shelf and are never used”. (Unfortunately, there are two occasions where the units and the training received have been put to use already.)

Graham is always willing to give training whenever and where it is need.

17th February 2014 was the installation of Charity Mark Lodge at Bryn of which Graham has been a member for twenty two years and it was also a Provincial Team visit with the Provincial Grand Master, Peter Connolly, in attendance.
To everyone’s surprise the Provincial Grand Master opened a special Provincial Grand Lodge within Charity Mark and to the great delight of all those present Graham was promoted personally by the PGM to Past Provincial Grand Master Overseer in acknowledgement for the great work he has done.

Well done Graham. Congratulations
